Glenn Ibbitson
Based in Newcastle Emlyn, Glenn is best known as a realistic figure painter. Experience as a scenic artist, at the BBC and in the film industry, provided opportunities for him to practice trompe-l’oeil techniques on an industrial scale. Such visual subterfuge has guided his subsequent painting activity in a wide range of media
‘Consignment’ is a multi-media project in which the compositional device of tightly enclosing the figure within the picture frame’s confines is employed to represent human trafficking and extraordinary rendition. The project eventually comprised more than 260 individual works.
'Hiding in plain Sight' The visual strategies of deception observed in the structure, patterning and coloration present in moth families provided me with visual material to use as metaphor for dissident activity operating under the radar; fully functioning in plain view, but hidden from all but the closest scrutiny. A response to Orwell's 'Nineteen Eighty-four', this project is based on an inversion of the idea of sleight of hand; this time, protection and privacy is acheived not by leading the eye away from the real subject, but rather fooling it into overlooking or misreading direct evidence presented to the eye.
